Local Program - Position Statement

All-Day Kindergarten

Position (April 2005)

The League of Women Voters of Montgomery County supports mandatory one-half-day school attendance for 5 year olds, i.e., kindergarten for children 5 years old at the state school entry day.

The League supports requiring school corporations to establish either a full-day or a combination full-day and half-day program for kindergarten, with parents determining in which program their child participates. This position assumes the State will provide tuition support at the same level as that provided for public school children beginning in first grade.

Until state funding becomes a reality, the League supports and urges our three local school corporations to explore creative funding options to provide all-day kindergarten experiences for as many youngsters as possible.
